How pitch lines are maintained on grass surfaces.

A pitch line looks simple from the stand. Underneath it is a repeating cycle of measurement, marking and remarking that has to survive weather, mowing and ninety minutes of studs.

Setting out: the first marking is the one that matters

Before any paint touches grass, the pitch is measured. Corners are pegged, string lines are stretched between them, and right angles are checked — traditionally with a 3-4-5 triangle of tape, now often with laser or GNSS equipment. Every later marking follows this first geometry, so an error here is repeated all season. A wobbly touchline on a Sunday-league ground usually means the string stage was skipped, not that the marker had a bad day.

The overmarking cycle

Lines fade continuously: rain dilutes them, mowing shaves them, growth pushes unpainted grass through them, and play scuffs them. Grounds teams therefore overmark — repaint over the existing line — on a regular cycle, typically weekly in season and again before a fixture if conditions demand it. Overmarking is faster than setting out because the old line acts as the guide, which is also its risk: each pass can drift slightly, and a line overmarked carelessly for months slowly widens and wanders.

What marking paint actually is

Modern grass marking paints are water-based emulsions carrying a white pigment, usually titanium dioxide, formulated to sit on the leaf without harming the plant. They come ready-to-use or as concentrates diluted on site, with the dilution ratio balancing brightness against cost and coverage. This is a genuine departure from the older chalk, whitewash and lime methods — brighter, rain-resistant and safe on skin — and it is why a line today can look almost identical in August and February. Household paint and caustic materials have no place on turf: the first kills the grass, the second was abandoned for injuring players.

Transfer wheel or spray

Two machine families dominate. Wheel-to-wheel transfer markers roll a wheel through a trough of paint and press it onto the grass — simple, cheap and hard to break, but heavier on paint. Pressurised spray markers atomise the paint through a shrouded nozzle, giving a crisper edge with less material, and they are what most professional grounds use. The newest option is the GNSS-guided robot, which stores the pitch coordinates and drives the initial marking-out itself; the grounds team then overmarks conventionally.

Weather, mowing and the growth curve

Grass is a living surface, so line maintenance follows the plant. Spring and early-autumn growth means lines are mown off faster and need more frequent overmarking; winter dormancy holds lines longer but adds mud, frost and standing water, which destroy them differently. Heavy rain shortly after marking can wash a fresh line out entirely. Groundskeeping calendars are built around this: the line schedule tracks the mowing schedule, and both track the fixture list.

Faults you can read from the stand

Line condition tells you about the ground. Grey, thin lines suggest over-diluted paint or an overdue cycle. Double edges mean drifting overmarking. A dead brown line burned into the turf is the ghost of the old herbicide method. Lines that are bright but geometrically off — a bulging centre circle, a penalty area out of square — point to setting-out problems rather than material ones. Professional bodies such as the Grounds Management Association publish the standards this work is judged against.

Why older lines looked different

Everything above explains the historical look by contrast. Before purpose-made paints and metered sprayers, lines were duller materials applied less precisely on a cycle driven by cost. The result — soft edges, uneven brightness, geometry that drifted between remarkings — is exactly what period photographs show, and exactly what a believable reconstruction of an old ground should keep. A 1985 floodlit pitch with 2020s line quality reads as wrong even to viewers who cannot say why.

Groundskeeper’s note

The test of a pitch line has not changed in a century: can a linesman call offside from it at full speed, in the rain, in the last minute? Materials answer that question differently in every era — which is what makes lines useful evidence for dating a ground.
