A Legendary Stadium, A Constant Evolution
Nestled in the heart of Madrid, the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu stands as a monument to the rich history and unwavering spirit of Real Madrid, one of the most successful football clubs in the world. This iconic stadium has been the stage for countless triumphs, heart-stopping moments, and the unwavering passion of the Madridistas, the team’s devoted fans.
The story of the Bernabeu dates back to the 1940s, when Real Madrid’s then-president, Santiago Bernabeu, envisioned a grand stadium that would serve as the club’s permanent home. Opened in 1947, the original Bernabeu was a bold statement, capable of accommodating a staggering 100,000 spectators – a record that would stand until the inauguration of the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro during the 1950 World Cup.
Over the decades, the Bernabeu has undergone a series of transformations, reflecting the club’s unwavering commitment to staying at the forefront of stadium design and fan experience. In the 1950s, the installation of floodlights allowed for night matches, while a roof was added before the 1982 World Cup, enhancing the stadium’s all-weather capabilities.
The 1990s saw another major overhaul, led by architect Carlos Lamela, who increased the stadium’s height by 20 meters, added a new stand, and introduced the iconic four towers that have become synonymous with the Bernabeu’s silhouette. This project increased the stadium’s capacity to 106,000, cementing its status as one of the largest and most impressive football venues in Europe.
However, the Bernabeu’s evolution did not end there. In the early 2000s, under the leadership of Florentino Perez, Real Madrid embarked on an ambitious redevelopment plan that would transform the stadium into a true 21st-century marvel.
The Bernabeu Reborn: A Vision of the Future
In 2011, Real Madrid’s shareholders approved a landmark decision to finance the Bernabeu’s most ambitious renovation project to date. With a budget of over 1 billion euros, the club set out to create a stadium that would not only serve as their home but also become a global destination for sports, entertainment, and leisure.
The redesigned Bernabeu is a testament to cutting-edge architecture and engineering, featuring a striking facade that resembles a futuristic spacecraft. The most eye-catching element is the retractable roof, a system of two giant panels, each weighing 800 tons and spanning 144 meters in length. This innovative feature allows the stadium to be fully enclosed, creating a climate-controlled environment that enhances the atmosphere and protects fans from the elements.
But the Bernabeu’s transformation goes far beyond its exterior. Beneath the playing surface, a novel design system allows the pitch to be folded neatly away, creating a versatile space that can accommodate a wide range of events, from concerts and conventions to international sporting competitions.
“The concept of a stadium has changed radically,” explains architect Carlos Lamela, who has been involved in multiple Bernabeu projects over the years. “What the club wants now is that if it is not used every day at least it is used almost every day. That it should be a leisure centre where people go to spend the day. That was the idea behind the new project.”
A Multifunctional Masterpiece
The new Bernabeu is not just a football stadium; it is a multifunctional masterpiece that aims to redefine the role of a sports venue in the modern era. The retractable pitch, for instance, allows the club to host a diverse array of events, from the world’s biggest musical acts to international sporting competitions, without compromising the integrity of the playing surface.
“The pitch is not the only new element – for the first time the Bernabeu will be completely covered at times thanks to the retractable roof,” explains Tristan Lopez-Chicheri, the chief executive of the L35 architecture firm leading the project. “It is made up of two giant panels each of which weighs 800 tonnes and is 144 metres long. A service tunnel will run the length of the stadium under the roof.”
This commitment to versatility is mirrored in the stadium’s facade, which has been designed to be equally impressive from multiple angles. “Normally stadiums are located in open areas and you have a lot of perspective to see them, but not the Bernabeu,” says Lopez-Chicheri. “The design has four or five sightlines that move and generate this fluidity. No two metres of the Bernabeu’s facade are the same.”
A Challenging Undertaking
The Bernabeu’s redevelopment has not been without its challenges. The lack of space around the stadium and the presence of an old commuter tunnel underneath have forced the architects to devise innovative solutions, such as dividing the pitch into several sections that can be stacked underground.
“Having done the renovation in an existing stadium and playing matches while the works were being done, I don’t think anyone would dare to do this again,” says Alejandro Lorca, the head of the renovation project and a partner architect at L35.
The project’s complexity has also led to some conflict between the club and the architects, particularly regarding the placement of the roof. According to Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, this issue has caused further setbacks and delayed the completion of the project, which is now expected to be unveiled in December 2023 – a year later than initially planned.
Despite these challenges, the club remains committed to delivering a stadium that will not only serve as a state-of-the-art home for Real Madrid but also become a landmark destination for sports and entertainment enthusiasts worldwide.
A Fortress for the Champions
The Estadio Santiago Bernabeu has long been known as a fortress for Real Madrid, a venue where the team’s dominance and the passion of its supporters have coalesced to create an intimidating atmosphere for visiting teams. Former Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini vividly recounts the “emotion” and “excitement” of his team’s rare triumph at the Bernabeu, highlighting the challenge that awaits any opponent.
“It is special to play in the Bernabeu because Real Madrid has a particular legacy with the Champions League,” Chiellini says. “They are very able to turn a not-beautiful moment in the Spanish league into an amazing performance in the Champions League.”
This sentiment is echoed by former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moya, who acknowledges the Bernabeu’s formidable reputation. “Everyone in Europe knows the worst team to draw in a Champions League tie or especially in a final is Real Madrid,” Moya tells The Athletic.
The Bernabeu’s ability to amplify the aura of Real Madrid’s legendary players has been a significant factor in the club’s unparalleled success in the Champions League. As Chiellini points out, “These are players who have played Champions League finals, World Cups, European Championships. Madrid have an advantage due to their players’ experience.”
A Beacon for the Future
As the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu nears the completion of its ambitious redevelopment, it stands as a testament to Real Madrid’s unwavering ambition and the club’s commitment to providing its loyal fans with a truly world-class experience.
Beyond its status as a football stadium, the Bernabeu is poised to become a global destination for sports, entertainment, and leisure, offering a multifunctional platform that can host a wide range of events and activities. This vision aligns with the club’s desire to create a “leisure centre” where people can spend the day, further cementing the Bernabeu’s role as a beacon for the future of stadium design and fan engagement.
As the project nears its final stages, the Bernabeu’s transformation promises to redefine the very concept of a sports venue, blending cutting-edge architecture, innovative technology, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. For Real Madrid and its devoted supporters, the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is poised to remain a fortress and a symbol of the club’s enduring legacy for generations to come.
