A service tunnel will run the length of the stadium under the roof.”
This commitment to versatility is mirrored in the stadium’s facade, which has been designed to be equally impressive from multiple angles. “Normally stadiums are located in open areas and you have a lot of perspective to see them, but not the Bernabeu,” says Lopez-Chicheri. “The design has four or five sightlines that move and generate this fluidity. No two metres of the Bernabeu’s facade are the same.”
A Challenging Undertaking
The Bernabeu’s redevelopment has not been without its challenges. The lack of space around the stadium and the presence of an old commuter tunnel underneath have forced the architects to devise innovative solutions, such as dividing the pitch into several sections that can be stacked underground.
“Having done the renovation in an existing stadium and playing matches while the works were being done, I don’t think anyone would dare to do this again,” says Alejandro Lorca, the head of the renovation project and a partner architect at L35.
The project’s complexity has also led to some conflict between the club and the architects, particularly regarding the placement of the roof. According to Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, this issue has caused further setbacks and delayed the completion of the project, which is now expected to be unveiled in December 2023 – a year later than initially planned.
